In Absence (diary entry)

Unfortunatley, due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to teach tonight’s lesson. Richard Barnes, 3rd Dan British Combat Association Geoff Thompson’s Real Combat Method taught in my stead.

According to his report, training began with a 15 minute circuit of exercises as a warm-up. This was then followed up with work on the fence and discussing issues relating to striking first. This is still a highly contentious issue and even more so in children’s self-defence. Aside from confusion over morality or laws, there is the barrier of allowing a student permission to strike first when all options of escape and avoidance are not open.

The class was then mainly focused on sparring. This began with some groundwork, which began with escape from the mount specific sparring. An extra element that straddled self-defence involved adding extra “weapons” i.e. pinching, which changed the dynamic altogether.

Richard looked at restriction, pitting grapplers against strikers, kickers against punchers and left side against right side. This type of sparring forces students to strengthen weaknesses, look at fighting from other angles and to discover new tactics. The class finished with some dodge ball games.
