I was born into an old travelling circus family and have written for a number of publications, including British national newspapers and several magazines. My self-protection and martial arts experience came from a wide range of eclectic sources as well as some of the best and most-respected teachers in recent history. I teach locally, nationally and internationally.

  • I became interested in martial arts at age 13 when I would box with my cousins and use a rolled up bit of canvas as a kick bag and a trapeze bar for pull-ups
  • Started Sakiado at age 14
  • Almost had my hand torn off by a hyena at age 16. Martial arts discipline and attitude were an important part of my recovery.
  • Got my first black belt at age 16 under the founder, Peter Baines.
  • Switched to TAGB Taekwon-do and stayed there for two years (mainly stagnating)
  • Got another reality check at age 18 when I sparred with three street-fighters from the circus. Each bout brought home different undeniable flaws in the way I had been learning to fight over the past two years.
  • I contacted Geoff Thompson and began following his methods straight after this event. He replied to each of my letters with a hand-written reply and his philosophy made a very strong impression on me, an impression that would stay with me for ten years.
  • I began Kickboxing at age 18. I was given private tuition and made it to instructor level (1st Dan). I re-learnt a lot about real fighting and loads about the scummy side of martial arts. I taught for four and a half years. A book on its own would not do justice to what happened during that time!
  • I began cross-training in Wu Shu, Qigong and traditional Chinese martial arts under Shaolin temple disciple Laoshi Neil Genge in a desire to put on an original martial arts live performance. I studied them on and off for five years, gaining a blue sash. I also did a couple of weekends with Alaisdair Monteith’s Wu Shu Academy. During this time I began cross-training a lot more.
  • I studied Eskrima under Peter Lewis, Freestyle Karate/Kung Fu under European Champion, Israel Robert McKenzie and also learnt some grappling skills from a pro wrestling friend of mine.Â
  • I began the UK‘s first extreme pro wrestling promotion in 1998 with my wrestler friend and also presented my gothic martial arts act, “Dead Souls”. We attracted a lot of local news and the attention of the local police with our use of real barbed wire in the staged matches and the over-the-top stunts. We got the front cover of Combat martial arts magazine, an 8 page spread and the attention of their now editor, Malcolm Martin. Malcolm became a character in the show and still occasionally works as an MC for the promotion which is now completely run by my wrestling friend.
  • In 2000 I received intensive private tuition under Sifu Eduann Barnard in Choy Lay Fut, under Pius Ngubo in Noma Ukushaya Induku  (Zulu Stick Fighting) and under my cousin, who runs a game park, in hand-gun self-protection methods.
  • I co-founded the Combat Performance Academy with my wrestling business partner and ran it until 2002. It was created to teach and insure pro wrestling students and students of performance-based martial arts.
  • I moved back into studying martial arts in earnest in 2003 taking up Dentokan Ju Jutsu under sensei Giles Chamberlin and Muay Thai under Kru Tony Hayes. I spent most of each week studying these two arts.
  • The Ju Jutsu was quite pragmatic, albeit very traditional, in its approach, and included a little Newaza sparring (which included finger locks, face-bars and controlled eye gouging) as well as cross-training in other styles (the instructor taught other systems of Ju Jutsu, such as Kamishin Ryu and Daito Ryu, and some Aikido and Toyama Ryu Iaido). I got to green belt before I found myself naturally evolving into other areas of my life. It remains a great club, I believe, and a good example for other traditional dojos.
  • I loved Muay Thai and I had originally wanted to do this after Kickboxing (my Kickboxing involved some aspects of Muay Thai). I studied intensely under Kru Tony Hayes, attending as many lessons as I could, private tuition, attending any seminars and courses, and eventually being invited to my Kru’s exclusive Fight Club, where fighters and prospective instructors could fight at a higher level.
  • I was certificated as a “Training Instructor” in Muay Thai and attended a judge’s course under the hugely respected Muay Thai coach, Tony Myers (I also shadow-judged after this) shortly before leaving the style. I was also teaching quite a few lessons for my instructor.
  • I founded Clubb Chimera Martial Arts and ran our first cross-training seminar consisting of street Muay Thai and Combat Grappling
  • In 2004 I began a strong campaign to train with as many good instructors as possible and also to get my writing regularly in print. I have trained with varying degrees of regularity under Mo Teague, Iain Abernethy, the British Free-Fighting Academy (intensive self-defence pressure-testing weekend), Richard Bustillo (weekend course), Chris Rowen, Steve Rowe, Dennis Jones, Rick Young, Peter Consterdine, Russell Stutely, Alan Gibson, Mick Coup (several private training sessions), Karl Tanswell, Dave Fenton and many others. I also took these experiences and wrote them up for Martial Arts Illustrated Magazine.
  • After four years of being promised to have my work published in Combat Magazine my martial arts hero, Geoff Thompson, got me into Martial Arts Illustrated, where often up to three articles at a time are presented in this top-selling publication.
  • In 2004 I fulfilled a dream and actually met and trained under Geoff Thompson at his seminar in July.
  • I began taking regular private lessons under Matty Evans in 2004. We became fast friends and he became my centre for information as I cross-trained. Matty taught me various aspects of Geoff’s system, as well as areas in Vale Tudo, Greco-Roman/Freestyle Wrestling, some work with the Judo gi and some Boxing.
  • At the end of September 2004 I also took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No-Gi Submission Grappling under Braulio Estima (regular World champion). This is currently the most regular formal martial art that I study.
  • At the same full-time gym I also regularly train with many other martial arts instructors in the Mongrel Fighting System initiated by Steve Brindel (Stevie B), which is very much in alignment with the CCMA approach to self-protection.
  • Clubb Chimera Martial Arts gradually progressed and I promoted several seminars featuring Wing Chun realist, Dave Fenton, Matty Evans in his first official public seminar, Core Combatives founder Mick Coup and John “Awesome” Anderson (the legendary street-fighter who taught Geoff Thompson the art of doorwork) together with Matty Evans again in his first-ever public seminar.
Clubb Chimera Martial Arts is a unique system in that it is an “anti-style” and its syllabus contains no specific techniques. Common sense and principles are at the systems ever adapting core, followed by two highly adaptable yet robust and natural strategies.
  • Clubb Chimera Martial Arts is a proud member of the UK’s leading martial arts and self-protection associations: Shi Kon Budo Kai/Martial Arts Standards Agency, the British Combat Association, National Education Systems for Training and World Combat Arts.
  • I am particularly proud of the way I have been able to use pressure-testing, conflict management and other realistic training methods that are usually reserved for the hardcore specialists and elite students to teach “everyday” people. Many of my students involved in self-defence are children. CCMA’s approach to training children is considered by the martial arts world as revolutionary, affecting a shift in the attitude many instructors are having towards self-protection training for today.
  • Being a cross-trainer, I embrace the concept of keeping an open mind and it is a requisite for students to research other systems during their ascent through the grades.
  • I insist on having an experienced self-protection instructor (preferably someone with many genuine real-life experiences behind them) as a guest on my grading panel. So far Dave Fenton (MYS Wing Chun), Anthony Somers (Geoff Thompson’s Real Combat System), Mick Coup (C2: Core Combatives), Mo Teague (World Combat Arts/Functional Jeet Kune Do) and Iain Abernethy have graded my students.
  • I edited the book, “Japanese Martial Arts” for Summersdale Publications in 2005.
  • I created, wrote and presented Clubb Chimera’s DVD for Summersdale Productions, “Cross-Training in the Martial Arts: The Anatomy of Combat”. It features me alongside Rick Young, Iain Abernethy, Alan Gibson, Mo Teague, Peter Consterdine, Chris Rowen and Geoff Thompson. The DVD has received rave reviews in the martial arts press, getting DVD of the month in the Christmas edition of Combat and a big feature in Martial Arts Illustrated’s Christmas issue for 2005.
  • I created, wrote and presented the best-selling sequel “Cross-Training in the Martial Arts 2: The Anatomy of Hand Strikes”, which was the fastest-selling DVD in Summerdale Productions history by the summer of 2006.
  • 2006: I was invited to a weekend’s intensive training at the Keysi Fighting Method UK by KFM co-founder, Andy Norman.
  • I wrote a series of articles for Martial Arts Illustrated Magazine late in 2006 into 2007, that have already won praise from martial arts students and instructors, on Reality Training for Children,
  • Early in 2006 I was one of a privileged few to be invited to attend Geoff Thompson’s private early morning training groups.
  • On 25th February 2007, acclaimed pragmatic martial arts coach John Skillen stepped forward to be the first to invite CCMA to run a full day training course for children in self-protection. The seminar was a big success and further courses are planned.
  • Early in 2007 I began supplementing my personal training under Steve Brindel, the co-owner of the acclaimed hardcore gym and martial arts centre, Stevie B’s in Acock’s Green, Birmingham. Steve hosts a club of mainly experienced martial arts instructors and streetfighters that runs along very similar lines as CCMA, promoting a proactive and adaptable mindset, as opposed to technique-led dogma.
  • In 2007 I resumed my training under Geoff Thompson in his instructor training course.
  • I was approached by Combat Magazine on several occasions in 2007 and now write regularly for both Martial Arts Illustrated and Combat Magazine, the UK’s top selling martial arts magazines. This is both in a reviewing capacity and also writing features on the CCMA system.
  • On 4th November 2007 I finally received my instructor certificate from the martial arts/self-defence instructor who inspired the greatest changes I made in my martial arts career. With some very kind and encouraging words regarding my future from the man himself, Geoff Thompson awarded me my instructor’s grade upon successful completion of his course.
  • In December 2007 I was one of the selected few to become an event partner with European Festival of Martial Arts. This event will be held at Disney Land Paris in September 2008. I am the official PR representative for the festival and CCMA will be teaching their children’s self-defence methods in Paris at the event.
  • On 26th January 2008 we launched our first CCMA franchise, CCMA Hastings, which is headed by Stu Allen.
  • CCMA was booked for its first international seminar by Aidan Caroll’s Hard Target Self Defence Systems in Dublin, Ireland on 29th March 2008 to a great reception. I was thoroughly impressed with the Hard Target instructors and Aidan Caroll’s whole approach to self defence and the martial arts. Plus what a great country!
  • CCMA makes the front cover of Iain Abernethy’s “Jissen!” online PDF magazine with my article “The Hierarchy of Training”
  • Clubb Chimera Martial Arts in conjunction with Mo Teague’s World Combat Arts ran a children’s MMA workshop at the European Festival of Martial Arts, Disneyland Paris on 27th September 2008.
  • In 2008 CCMA articles became a regular feature in two high profile PDF magazines. Jissen’s third edition ran “Martial Arts Scepticism: A Manifesto”, my most controversial article to date, as the lead piece. The first edition of the Australian PDF magazine Global Self Protection also ran a CCMA article at the front of their first issue, “The Process: Common Sense”. This is the first of the Process series of articles.
  • On 11th and 12th November CCMA ran the first of a series of workshops for The Law Society/SRA, training professionals basic self defence skills in the workplace. These workshops are completely focused on training civilians who may be entering potentially dangerous environments. The course received 100% positive feedback with bookings set for 2009.
  • My first book, “The Legend of Salt and Sauce” is re-released as an extensively revised second edition in October 2008 and was officially launched at the Wolverhampton Light House Cinema on 13th November.
  • I am invited to sit on the panel of self defence instructors in Ireland to grade the “Hard Target Self Defence” instructors for 2009.
  • 07 January 2009 – I begin to publicly publish diary entries on my classes in Coventry to favourable feedback and inspire other coaches to do likewise.
  • February 2009 – My forward to Geoff Thompson’s book “Everything that Happens to me is Fantastic” is published.
  • Bookings for the SRA/Law Society continue in March 2009 – at the end of the year’s booking CCMA will have taught over 68 employees of the firm their method of self protection.
  • “Martial Arts Scepticism: Ancient Wisdom and Philosophy” appears in the bumper fourth edition of the Jissen! magazine once again as the lead article. Jissen! gets its own website and its subscription rate continues to grow.
  • 4 and 5 April 2009 CCMA teaches their revolutionary system at the first Martial Arts Festival UK.
  • After a successful run of courses for the Solicitors Regulation Authority/Law Society’s Forensic Investigation Unit I receive a letter indicating 100% positive feedback from all six workshops conducted by CCMA.
  • 17 and 18 October 2009 I am one of four instructors to be awarded the position of as a ”Hard Target Group” instructor under Mo Teague, and co-teach a weekend seminar for the RST professional security training company
  • November 2009 my “Martial Arts Scepticism” series of articles yet again are featured first in Iain Abernethy’s Jissen! online magazine going out to over 1,000 subscribers worldwide.
