Clinch and Ground Revision (diary entry)

17.12.20 I resumed some teaching consultancy for Forest Schools of Karate, picking up from the last lesson on clinch and previous lessons on ground-fighting. The lesson began with a revision of the pinning drill. I looked at details presented by each of the pins, including some submission opportunities and paid particular attention to the transitioning, especially the importance of keeping the hips low. We then moved onto the cut-off from the rear waist-lock. From here we looked at switching to […]

Clinch and Ground (diary entry)

two on one to back

20.08.20 Thursday night was a teacher constultancy session with two independent karate instructors who are operating within a Covid-19 bubble. Previously we went through some basic pinning and escaping side control. Tonight’s lesson dealt with breaking a collar-tie grip and escaping from guard. We began with a warm-up of clinch and ground callisthenics, designed to hit all the muscle groups and movements we would be using tonight as well reinforcing some basic technique. Then we went straight into the clinch […]

More Two-on-One Work & Sparring (diary entry)

2on1 weapon restraint5

31.08.19   I just taught one part of my usual duo of junior clients this Saturday. We have reached our seventh hour of their basic course on clinch/stand-up grappling. Today we revised a lot of material, due to the large layoff between sessions, and I also focused on developing the two-on-one as well as sparring.   We warmed up with dynamic stretching and wrestling callisthenics. Next we moved onto break-falls and rolls. Then we moved onto bulling to set up […]

Attack Lines (diary entry)

single leg 2

21.08.19   Tonight’s junior lesson introduced another attack from the two-on-one for stand-up grappling as well as foot sweeps and the senior lesson went over some core material to be covered in Sunday’s Vagabond Warriors Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training.   The junior lesson began with agility ladder warm-ups, this time including double leg takedown drills. We followed this with bulling/collar and elbow tie, where we continued our work from the two-on-one. It was important to ensure this […]

Attacks from the Two-on-One (diary entry)

2on1 weapon restraint1

07.08.19   Wednesday’s junior lesson looked at some more agility training for wrestling and building attacks off the two-on-one. The senior lesson was concerned with switch-hitting and fighting the southpaw.   The first half of the junior lesson looked at various drills on the agility ladder. After some general and wrestling specific footwork we moved onto various crawls and escapes, including the sit-out using the ladder. This is great for developing balance when in motion and provides my client with […]

Two on One (diary entry)

2on1 weapon restraint1

03.07.19   My junior client continued his clinch/stand-up grappling training with more work on the elbow and neck tie-up and outer reap throw, and was introduced to the two-on-one tie-up.   We warmed up with break-fall/roll combinations from all directions. Once I was confident these were smooth enough and we had discussed their benefits when reversing a technique we went straight into the elbow and neck tie-up. Here we looked at fluid transitioning, correct stances and I introduced “bulling”. This […]
