Turtle Attack & Defence (diary entry)

IMG_2049

12.12.2022 My couple client’s fifth hour brought them onto the turtle position and we covered Mixed Martial Arts attack and defence tactics. We went through five attacking tactics. This began with punches, taking the form of swings and hammer-fists. Of all the attacks this is the most simple and least compromises the attacker’s position. Next we moved onto elbow strikes, which are a little more restrictive and demand some degree of creativity due to MMA rule-sets. After this we moved […]

21.09.2022 My junior lesson continued work on the turtle position whereas my session lesson was a boxing lesson looking at Cuban method influences. After a warm-up my junior client first covered attacking the turtle. We looked at variations on attacking with the arm-bar. This was followed with defending from the turtle using knee bars. These included variations of snaking/shrimping, hip raise arm-bars and triangles, and upas. We then went straight to closed guard and looked at the set up for the arm-bar. Hip movement is crucial throughout the […]

21.01.20   This Tuesday brought my client up to the seventh hour of his second Submission Grappling/Ground-Fighting course. We focused entirely on attacking and defending the turtle position.   The lesson began with a series of crawling callisthenics, specific to submission grappling. These also included three variations of sit-outs, rolling from turtle to guard partner drills and movement around the turtle position, all of which are directly relevant to tonight’s subject matter.   We then revised the basic attack on […]

Tarn back mount1

14.01.20   My first Tuesday night lesson brought my client up to the sixth hour of his second Submission Grappling/Ground-Fighting course. Due to missing a few weeks’ training we decided to do a revision of all the main areas before finishing with work in the turtle position.   We began with ground grappling callisthenics. The final callisthenics included three different types of sit-out exercises that can be utilised to better condition for the turtle position. Then we ran through both […]
