Striking Setups for Submissions (diary entry)

Striking from the knee pin1

07.11.2022 Hour two of my couple clients’ course on Mixed Martial Arts groundwork brought us on to layering the striking work from last week with submissions. All of these submissions came from the opponent defending the strikes and taking advantage of the positioning presented. We covered the following: Side control – hammer-fists to the head, knees to the near side ribs and elbows to far side ribs to set up a cutting armbar. Scarf-hold – hook punches into arm-triangle. Knee […]

Teacher Development Programme: Submissions (diary entry)

Guard Teacher Development (1)

23.11.2021 Tuesday night’s first lesson brought my teacher development programme, booked by Denmark’s Holstebro Taekwondo Klub via Zoom, to a conclusion for this year. This was an extra 12th hour added on in order to better round off the ground-figthing/submission grappling section. Fortunately due to the experience, knowledge and adaptability of my client and his assistant teacher, we have been able to cover a surprising amount of material. Tonight we finished off the top position with some work on arm-locks […]

06.03.20   Friday night’s lesson brought my regular client up the two and a half hour point of this particular course on Submission Grappling/Ground Fighting. As per our last lesson, we thought it best to thoroughly revise material in previous courses on this discipline before moving onto new material.   After a preliminary warm-up we did 2 x 3 minute rounds of grappling calisthenics, dedicating 30 seconds to each exercise. These exercises worked top position, guard, submissions and escapes. Next […]

Introducing the Guard (diary entry)

armbar from guard

22.10.19   After a layoff my client returned for the eighth hour of his Submission Grappling/Ground-Fighting course. Due to the time off, my client has decided to book me in for an additional 10 hours when this course finishes. Clients typically add on two extra hours to a basic 10 hour course due to the sophistication of this discipline. Tonight we revised previous material with the exception of escaping pins and focused on the closed guard.   We began with […]

13.03.19 My second lesson of the day was my regular nephew and uncle team. The junior lesson covered horizontal knees, uppercut elbows, side elbows, diagonal elbows and chopping elbows in Muay Thai. The senior lesson looked at effective transitioning from the top position into pins, submissions and striking. The junior lesson warmed up with mirror footwork, building up basic combinations and then moving onto the clinch. When in the clinch we looked at various positions for setting up knee strikes […]

Takedown and Submit (diary entry)

DSC_0146

07.11.2018   Tonight’s junior boxing lesson focused on moving in and out of the fight zone. Previous lessons have promoted footwork with upper body mobility, but we haven’t done a lot of work on tactics. This time I looked at a hit and run strategy for shorter fighters. We looked at slipping past linear punches and then moving out of the striking range only to come back in again from another angle. Forwards and backwards footwork, v-steps and circling were […]

MMA Escapes and Submissions Begin (diary entry)

armbar from guard5 (close up)

01.09.18   This morning was my client’s penultimate lesson is a scheduled 10 hour course on MMA Ground-Fighting. After some discussion, we have decided to extend the course due to the sophisticated nature of submission fighting. Today we focused on basic escapes and began guard-work.   The warm-up was entirely geared towards callisthenics from underneath – snaking, bridging and crab-crawls. We then did a partner warm-up using bridges (upas) from underneath side-control.   We looked at escapes from four major […]

Striking from Knee-Pin & Mount (diary entry)

Striking from the knee pin1

04.08.18   This morning, my client completed the third hour of his 10 hour course on Mixed Martial Arts Ground-Fighting. We focused combinations from the knee-pin and mounted position, and then tied them together in a complete conditioning exercise to promote technique muscle-memory.   Today’s training method was to establish the pin, isolate strikes from the pin, put the strikes into a combination, add on appropriate submissions and then link the pins. Strikes and submissions were taught as a means […]
