Stand-up Combination 3 (diary entry)

High Kick - Kickboxing

18.01.21 Athena School of Karate very kindly booked me back to continue my series of workshops on stand-up combinations. These half an hour sessions conducted – as all training sessions have been during the lockdown restrictions – via online live video streaming, teach and break down Dutch-inspired kickboxing combinations. Our objective is to promote better rhythm and flow in stand-up strikes. This week we covered combination number 3. This particular combination is noted for its particularly lengthy series of punches […]

Stand-up Combination Workshop 2 (diary entry)

11.01.21 My stand-up fighting course with the Athena School of Karate continued with the second combination. We warmed up by going through the last week’s combination at a steady pace. Tonight’s combination was a set up for a high kick  whereas the previous one featured two body kicks and a low kick, so it was a good way to get the hips mobile and to prepare for the big kick. I also made a point about swapping out the high […]

Stand-up Combination Workshop Series 1 (diary entry)

04.01.21 My second lesson of Monday was the first in a series of workshops on stand-up fighting. On the instructions of my teacher client, we are looking at one combination each half hour lesson. Tonight’s combination was jab/cross/slip/cross/hook/rear body round kick/shin-check/rear body round kick/hook/low round kick. Sparring Drills Continue (diary entry)

The first set looked at Western Boxing attacks and defences against kicks. The second added to this teeps and knees. The final set added in round kicks. We then commenced with […]

20.06.18   Today was the final lesson of this term’s course on Self-Defence/Mixed Martial Arts. Last lesson we switched entirely over to the MMA programme. This lesson offered a mixture of basic footwork, clinch, kicks and submissions.   The warm-up began with various techniques on the move – blitzing/bull-rush forwards, side-step transitioning from stand-up to clinch ranges, sprawl/knee combinations, snaking/shrimping and bear crawls. Everyone then partnered off for some important mirror footwork and coaching. Simple prompts consisted of jab/cross, sprawls, […]

45 Degree Round Kick (diary entry)

Gym1

30.12.15 The third lesson of my client’s second course in Muay Thai and Kickboxing for martial arts cross-training continued the same side striking theme and also looked at efficient countering to kicks as well as the 45 degree round kick. We warmed up, as we have generally been doing on this particular course, with a one-for-one exchange of kicks. We progressed with checking, blocking and evasions, moving up the body as the hips became looser. After some back combinations, we […]
