10.03.2023 Hour two of my Friday client’s lessons saw the beginning of his elder brother joining us. These are now another variation on my small group lessons. At present I have a couple, an uncle and nephew and a father and son training on regular basis. I have also had mother and daughter, mother and son, and brother and sister combinations. My clients in this case are both young adults. We went back to foundational skills and went through everything […]

Switch-Kick/Single Leg Takedown (diary entry)

Screen Shot 2023-03-08 at 15.05.48

06.03.2023 Hour four of my couple client’s Mixed Martial Arts course continued with our work using kicks to set up takedowns. We also stayed with the inside calf-kick entry. Tonight’s combination was a setup for the single leg. Unlike the double-leg, this takedown requires more to get on the blindside of the opponent. In order to get this angle, we used a double-kick attack. The calf-kick is immediately followed up with a […]

30.01.2023 My couple clients began their 10 hour full MMA course. This is following their 3 x 10 hour courses on MMA clinch, submission grappling and MMA ground fighting. We began with using the jab to set up low line shoots for the single and double leg. These setups were drilled using level shifts. The fighter attacks the highline with jabs before switching to the body  and then immediately going back to the head. This last punch is designed to […]

Single to MMA Ground Strategies (diary entry)

half guard attack

15.06.2022 My junior MMA client linked the single-leg takedown with his new ground strategy. After going back through the basics on the single leg from clinch we went to the guard and looked at using the half-guard get-up. When a fighter chooses to stand whilst holding their opponent in half-guard they are effectively carrying over the single-leg takedown positioning. The lesson finished with 4 x 2 minute specific MMA sparring. My senior submission grappling lesson continued looking at attacks from […]

Two Single-Leg Takedowns (diary entry)

single leg 2

17.01.2022 Hour six of my client couple’s course on the clinch brought us onto our first low-line attacks. After a warm-up that included revision break-falls, we did some grip fighting and drilling. I layered in sweeps they previously touched upon during our Muay Thai clinch to introduce them to the low-line takedown work. The lesson then focused on the single-leg takedown. We began with a mid-level entry point, which is the most systamatic of the basic single-legs. It involves a […]

Attack Lines (diary entry)

single leg 2

21.08.19   Tonight’s junior lesson introduced another attack from the two-on-one for stand-up grappling as well as foot sweeps and the senior lesson went over some core material to be covered in Sunday’s Vagabond Warriors Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training.   The junior lesson began with agility ladder warm-ups, this time including double leg takedown drills. We followed this with bulling/collar and elbow tie, where we continued our work from the two-on-one. It was important to ensure this […]

Changing Levels in Grappling (diary entry)

single leg 2

15.06.19 My second Saturday morning lesson saw my two junior clients enter their fourth hour of a 10 hour course on clinch/stand-up grappling. We looked more in depth into the waist-lock and taking the back, and I introduced the single-leg take down. We warmed up with a revision on break-falls and rolls. With this confirmed we got straight into some bulling and pummelling. From bulling I introduced the two-on-one position, controlling the arm. There were elements from this, such as […]

Progressive Grappling Sparring (diary entry)

28.05.19   Tuesday night saw my client reach the sixth hour of his basic course in stand-up grappling. We continued work linking up grips, sweeps and takedown entries. I was keen to involve more live, resistance-based work but not at the cost of poor fundamentals. Therefore, the lesson was as follows:   Warm-up of Indian Press-ups and Squats, dynamic stretching and exercises geared towards the actions to be performed today. We then went back through all our break-fall/roll combinations at […]

Combat Conditing Continues (diary entry)

PERSONAL TRAINING smaller

02.03.19   The first lesson of this morning saw my client complete his third hour of Combat Conditioning. We moved onto the reverse side and also focused a lot on circular techniques – hooks, round kicks, single-leg takedowns and kimura sweeps.   We warmed up with a series of sport specific calisthenics, dynamic stretching and mobility exercises for all ranges of combat. I did a good number of exercises that looked at working the oblique muscles and rotational movement of […]

29.09.18   My client reached the two and a half hour point of his scheduled second 10 hour course in Mixed Martial Arts. Today’s lesson was a complete run-through of all ranges with less time concerned with the ground. We looked at mainly punching entries – but later added on kicks and defended kicks – into takedowns.   We began with mirror foot-work. This progressed to changing levels, upper body movement (slips and rolling), range finding and cues to sprawl. […]
