03.11.2023 I arrived in Denmark to begin a weekend of teaching different services for Hostlebro Taekwondo Klub. Tonight we dedicated an hour or so to teaching a select number of teachers and senior students how to teach pressure testing concepts to children and adults. I was delighted that we were also joined by Jan Drachman and Henriette Vinther Toft who made it over from Hinnerup Karate. We established the following simple principles behind self-protection and martial arts pressure-testing: In order to […]

New “When Parents Aren’t Around” Seminar (diary entry)
11.06.2023 Clubb Chimera Martial Arts were honoured to be Kuroten Practical Karate’s first open seminar guests. I was booked to teach a children’s self-protection and adult martial arts cross double event in Wivenhoe, Colchester. My new “When Parents Aren’t Around” model was very kindly launched through Athena School of Karate to coincide with the release of the associated book in paperback form. Unlike previous iterations of the seminar, these events are more closely linked to the text of the new […]
Teaching with Iain Abernethy (diary entry)
17.12.2022 I met Iain Abernethy 18 years ago at a seminar run by “The Way of the Spiritual Warrior”. After writing review of the seminar for a magazine, Iain and I became fast friends. He appeared on two of my DVDs and we’ve had some great discussions on our respective podcasts, not to mention endless epic length telephone conversations. It seems ironic that out of all my martial arts colleagues I found the most shared common ground in terms of […]
Final Flurry & Smash (diary entry)
13.12.2022 I finished my trilogy of lessons in preparation for this Saturday’s joint seminar with Iain Abernethy. My section, at the request of Athena School of Karate, focuses on asymmetrical combination candances. In other words, putting together faster techniques with more powerful ones. My 2 x 1 hour slots will look at three boxing combinations and two kickboxing combinations. Today we looked at the finer details of the two kickboxing combinations, as the previous sessions had seen a lot on […]
Guards for Stand-up Combat Sports Seminar/Webinar (diary entry)
27.12.2021 The day after Boxing Day I was kindly invited to teach a webinar streamed directly into Kajuen Ryu’s class and shared with online teachers and students in the UK and Europe. The subject was guards for stand-up (full-contact) combat sports. Throughout the 20th century guards have evolved and branched off into a variety of directions. They are dictated by the individual – their physical make-up in relation to the majority of their likely opponents and their personality. I did […]
“When Parents Aren’t Around” Children’s Self-Protection Workshop (diary entry)
17.03.19 The first of two workshops I taught today for Keiryu Practical Karate in Maldon, Essex: “When Parents aren’t Around” – Child Self-Protection. Lee Mullan joins a growing number of teachers in Europe and Britain who have embraced a genuine need to teach practical and self-protection skills to children. I had the privilege of working with both enthusiastic child students from Lee’s club and other visiting martial arts schools as well as wonderfully supportive parents and teachers. This makes the […]
Report on the Cross Training Seminar Worcester (diary)
23.09.18 The second seminar of the day hosted by Kajuen ryu Ju Jutsu focused on martial arts cross training. There was no way I was going to get through everything and sadly we didn’t get to do as much sparring/pressure-testing coaching as I would have liked, but this was easily offset by the enthusiastic students in attendance. Once again, they were a credit to Peter Jones and also the now maturing subculture of progressive traditional martial artists that take […]
Boxing, Clinching, Transitioning & Coaching (diary entry)
19.09.18 Tonight saw the third half hour lesson in Junior Basic Western Boxing for Martial Arts Cross Training and my continuing series of lessons for my long-term senior student. This is a nephew/uncle arrangement that is proving to be hugely beneficial for both family members. The former gets full support, encouragement and extra training from his uncle and the latter improves his coaching/critical skills. Boxing continued the focus on the peek-a-boo style. We worked more looking at improving […]
