10.11.2022 Thursday morning continued my work teaching Hostlebro Taekwondo’s visiting two teachers from Denmark. This morning’s shorter session, which also saw involvement from Athena School of Karate’s Mary Stevens, looked at clinching from a self-defence perspective. We mainly trained all […]

09.08.21 My couple clients entered their fifth hour of a 10 hour course on stance-switching. Tonight we revised the previous lesson’s combination using a straight stance switch and shift to fight from a mirror side position. Then we looked at feinting with teep to move into the same mirror side position. In both instances we began with a simple entry combination and then we built on it. We then sandwiched each of the second combinations with a teep to exit. […]

Jabbing Drills (diary entry)

vijay PT 1

29.06.21 Forest School of Karate’s head teacher booked me for a second private lesson on Tuesday ahead of our class on Wednesday. Tonight we worked on using the jab. He was partnered with his and I was able to coach them both on use of the jab/parry and the duck, countering with jabs to the head and body. This was then integrated into footwork drills. I also introduced a simiple timing exercise. The lesson was finished with 2 x 2 […]

Dicing with Combos (diary entry)

third workout cover 2

13.06.21 It was my couple clients’ turn at the dice method. Having shadowed on all 14 rhythm and flow combinations over Skype during lockdown and then transferred onto focus mitts it was time test information retention and start blasting these out at random. We followed a routine of 10 minute warm-up, four 10 minute rounds of dice roll combinations and then 10 warm-down and stretch.   Services

Trapping with Sticks & Tricks with Kicks (diary entry)

chamber kick

12.05.21 My first client continued work with single and double stick fighting. We went through some more angles of attack, looking at extra stabs and then at one stick versus two stick sequences. The latter involved side checks to the head and I emphasised rebounding off intercepting strikes. Next we moved onto trapping with the sticks, making use of the butt end of the stick. My second client continued on the focus mitts with rhythm and flow combinations 11 and […]

Straight Right and Crosses (diary entry)

downward cross

29.04.21 Thursday night saw one of my teacher consultancy clients book me for his second lesson in Western Boxing for Martial Arts Cross Training. Tonight we focused on the right cross. This was an online virtual training lesson conducted via Zoom. However, he had his son present, which allowed me to coach them both on the focus mitts. At the beginning I explained the rather sinistrist attitude towards southpaws that described a basic rear straight punch as “straight right”. However, […]

Fluidity & Footwork (diary entry)

Dempsey book 7

24.10.20 My client reached hour seven of his course on Boxing techniques for martial arts cross training. We followed a similar routine to Tuesday and Wednesday’s clients, looking to increase fluidity through punches, develop footwork and look for small details to improve in basic technique. After our callisthenic and dynamic stretching warm-up we went through the basic punching isolation exercise. This consisted of throwing a constant flow of single straights, single uppercuts and single hooks before separating these into two-combinations […]

Philly Shell Movement Patterns (diary entry)

philly shell freddy

06.10.20 Tonight’s Skype session had my client reach the fourth hour of his course on Western Boxing. We are continuing work with the Philly Shell guard. The lesson began with the step-jab and then the pendulum step footwork drills. This then progressed onto using the back-step for angling off, a movement that is particularly effective in Philly Shell attacks. We then combined them – move in and out with a combination, drawing the opponent forward from where we angled off […]

Kickboxing & MMA from the Philly Shell (diary entry)

philly shell front kick

15.09.20 My Philly Shell training carried over into my teacher consultation lesson where we looked at bringing together much of what we had covered and integrated into kickboxing. We looked at the pullback/shoulder roll/rear hand parry into the right cross and back-step. From here we covered front kick variation or an inside round kick and then into a diamond step and spleen shot or outside round kick into a liver kick. This combination was then changed for MMA into jab/double […]

Passing guard and sweep revision (diary entry)

17 08 20 submission grappling

17.08.20 The third hour of my client’s Submission Grappling/Ground-Fighting course went back over the basic sweeps as well as the Kimura arm-lock from guard and passing guard. We began with our normal solo warm-up routine of ground-fighting callisthenics, including some new movements directly related to guard passing. Next the two lockdown partners performed some guard-passing drills before moving onto some resistance work. This took the form of a guard passing game where one had to get past the other’s […]

30.07.19 Tuesday night saw the first hour of my client’s first course in Submission Grappling for Martial Arts Cross Training. This lesson began with the top position and was mainly concerned with learning the major pinning positions and transitioning through them. We warmed up with bear crawls, lizard crawls, seal crawls and caterpillar crawls before snaking/shrimping forwards, backwards and from the side. Then we moved onto the first technique. Side control is a good solid position to begin from. It […]

Revision, Protecting Others & Post-Fight (diary entry)

Child and Mother Defence Pic

22.05.18   My 5:30 lesson brought my client’s first Basic Course on Self-Protection to a close. We revised the fence, straight striking, hook striking, transitional striking, the cover, multiple attackers, fighting from the ground, kicks and anti-grappling concepts.   We also covered adaptations for protecting others. This included using another person’s boundaries as a gauge for intercepting a threat, clearing the intended victim (the principle) and pre-emptive striking. Then we drilled removing a protected person from a dangerous area – […]

Combinations for the Final Lesson (diary entry)

6 Attacking the cover6 (small)

19.05.18   This morning my client trained in the final lesson of his second course on Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training. We went through most of the material covered in the course and focused on specific areas that needed more attention.   Warm-up began with mirror footwork, fighting at long range and then clinch, setting up various combinations. We addressed the v-step and the tactics of angling off. I likened the angling off tactics to chipping away at […]

We continued our work with the clinch and exclusive worked in and around this range. We also spent the majority of the lesson going through three sweeps.   Warm-up began with mirror footwork, which progressed onto pad-work. We went through a series of punching, kicking and punch-kick combinations that all ended with achieving a clinch position. The purpose of this […]

Transitional Sparring (diary entry)

16.05.18   Tonight’s lesson with my longest consecutively training client looked more on putting all the transitioning training together. The warm-up began with mirror footwork, going through all postures – off the back, seated, kneeling and standing. We angled off for v-steps, attacked and drew attacks. This progressed into clinching through postures, drilling grips with strikes and strikes into takedowns, takedowns from different lines of attacks and submissions from the ground.   This moved onto the focus mitts and we […]
