26.11.20 Ahead of teaching my client’s martial arts class on Monday, I suggested that we have a teacher consultancy lesson covering the clinch. Monday’s lesson is all about anti-grappling in connection to my “When Parents Aren’t Around” webinar series. Through experience, I have learned that it is important for students to have an understanding of stand-up grappling if they are to use effective tools to extricate themselves from a grappling situation. This is also important for partner work. It seems […]

More Dirty Boxing Teacher Training (diary entry)
14.01.20 My teacher training continued with more Dirty Boxing work. We drilled both collar tie and hooking pummelling exercises. From here I began layering forearm bumps, the ear rip and the under-hook into the cross-face. These strikes are directed to the sciatic and femoral nerves in the legs. The ear rip allows for a greater manipulating of the head than a standard collar tie. The cross-face from the under-hook is then combined with this technique for even greater domination. […]
Getting to Grips & Breaking Them (diary entry)
13.02.19 The first lesson of the day was with my Kingham Hill class. We entered the realm of anti-grappling and grappling for self-defence. I approached it a little differently than usual. On previous occasions I have gone straight for the anti-grappling tactics, but recently I have become more inclined to familiarise students with the grappling range. My belief is that by getting an idea of how someone grabs and tries to manhandle a student, brings home the importance of maintaining […]
Punching and Strategy in the Clinch (diary entry)
24.01.19 Tonight’s lesson was the ninth in my client’s Basic Western Boxing for Martial Arts Cross Training. We looked at various uses of the v-step and l-step, but mainly focused on the clinch. The warm-up consisted of mirror footwork, slipping and moving out of corners. By using the v-step and l-step to set up angles for punches, I encouraged my client to pick shots. These were done with increasing speed until we arrived at the Jack Johnson clinch setup strategy. […]
Tangle and Clear – Dirty Boxing (diary entry)
05.07.18 After a brief hiatus, my client returned to his Dirty Boxing Course reaching the seven and a half hour point. Today was primarily concerned with layering all material that had been previously covered. We also used different rule-sets to focus on certain principles in different ways. We were primarily concerned with old-school modern Western Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling and MMA. However, we also touched upon self-defence and how the pawing jab shares similarities with referencing tools. Warm-up […]
Over-Hook Double-Arm Trap (diary entry)
20.06.18 Tonight my client continued with our theme on trapping. We continued down our old school boxing route and explored a technique taught by the early 20th century world champion, “Gentleman” Jim Corbett, adding to it from an MMA perspective. We warmed up with mirror footwork. Then we combined clinching and breakaways, setting up various basic strikes. This moved into plumb and pummelling exercises, and finally a couple of rounds of wrestling sparring. Previously we used the […]
