Uppercuts & Spear Knees (diary entry)

Botley Class 3 uppercut

13.09.2022 As the title to this blog states, Tuesday’s second private lesson (hour five of my client’s course on Muay Thai basics) introduced uppercuts and spear knee strikes. The spear knee was briefly touched upon in our previous lesson during the warm-up. We warmed up with basic dynamic stretches followed by a flow drill. I then introduced my client to the agility ladder where we trained chopping forwards, sideways and backwards, Ali shuffles, Ickey shuffles and hip roll set for […]

The Spear Knee (diary entry)

30.08.2022 Hour four of my new client’s course on basic Muay Thai introduced and centred on the spear knee strike. We warmed up with the usual dynamic stretching and muscle activation exercises. This led into some line-work involving the spear knee. Here I introduced the Muay Thai concepts behind knee strikes. Of all the most well-known Southeast Asian kickboxing sports – such as Lethwei from Myanmar and Pradel Serey from Cambodia – Muay Thai is perhaps more known for its […]

MMA School Project (diary entry)

19.08.2022 Friday night’s second session was booked as part of a mixed martial arts project my new client is conducting at his school. We went through several ideas on how to proceed. When a new client comes to me with the mandate to teach them mixed martial arts, my usual advice is for them to go through the composite discipline course of boxing, muay Thai, wrestling and submission grappling before learning mma in earnest. On certain occasions I have just […]

19.08.2022 On Friday I began teaching a new tailored course to a new pair of clients. This time it was a father and son session. The father already had background experience training and competing in Muay Thai in Thailand as well as London. He booked me to provide an opportunity for his son year-old son to train alongside him in this fascinating combat art. We focused on forward and backward footwork along with jabs, crosses and lead leg teeps. These […]

08.06.2022 My last lessons on Wednesday were my junior MMA and senior Submission Grappling. In the former we went through boxing, kickboxing and a new strategy on the ground. In the latter we looked at linking up the basics of Eddie Bravo’s Rubber Guard in a flow pattern. The first lesson began with our normal warm-up specific and muscle activation exercises. We then went straight into boxing. After some assessment on my client’s defence against straight rights and some basic […]

Two Hour Personal Training (diary entry)

28.05.2022 I was booked to teach a special two-hour session for Kuroten Karate’s founder and her son. We focused on stand-up fighting, using boxing, kickboxing and muay Thai. After a brief warm-up, we covered footwork from boxing. On the request of my client, I taught angling off and circling out to exit from combinations. I explained differences between most conventional boxing and the peek-a-boo style. The peek-a-boo style arguably lends itself best to martial arts cross training due to the […]

28.04.2022 After recovering from a work-related back injury, my long-time client returned to finish at the 5.5 hour mark of his scheduled 10 hour (7 session) course. We are working through some set MMA combinations (thank you MMA Shredded!) and finishing with two rounds of one specific discipline. Last session we covered MMA combinations 1-5 and finished with Boxing. This time, having a shorter time allotment, we finished off this series of combinations with 6-8 and completed 2 x 3 […]

08.01.2022 Saturday morning saw three private lessons in a row. I finished my client’s previous course of 10 lessons and we progressed to the 1.5 hour point of his new block. Senior Muay Thai First client had a good level of skill in western boxing basics. We did more extensive combination work, including an 11 punch boxing combination and four short Muay Thai combinations. Senior Muay Thai My primary client’s lesson looked at a lot of counter-striking work. I included […]

04.01.2022 My client reached the 5.5 hour point of his course with a 1.5 hour lesson that included me teaching not only him but also his three children. They have all returned from a holiday in Thailand where they have been taking lessons in Muay Thai virtually every day. It was interesting to see how their technique had come on and what they had learned. I only had time to do a brief overview with them all, but we went […]

Muay Thai introduction & Butterfly Guard (diary entry)

Shadow Scarf Hold

15.12.2021 Wednesday night saw the start of a new junior client who is interested in learning some Kickboxing/Muay Thai and more work with my senior client on submission grappling where we covered the butterfly guard. Muay Thai training consisted of learning the jab, the straight right and the teep. These were trained in isolation and combined in different ways. After the warm-up I introduced each technique first through shadow work then target placement and finally on the focus mitts. Submission […]

Cover Elbow (loose)

15.11.2021 The eighth hour of my client couple’s course on the clinch brought in elbow strikes. For the benefit of at least one of the two clients we isolated elbow strikes than looked at their place in the clinch or even in combinations. After our standard warm-up of sport-specific dynamic stretching, callishenics and shadow boxing, we went through the following techniques: Major Elbow Strikes Horizontal Elbow – Popularly delivered off both lead and read arms from mid and close range. 11.11.2021 After last lesson’s taster of Mixed Martial Arts, my new junior client has opted to train in Muay Thai/Kickboxing for the remaining nine hours of his course. We focused on setting up the classic modern Muay Thai stance, which is square on, and coninued work on the teep, jab and cross. I also introduced spear knee strikes both in the warm-up and in the final intensive section of the lesson as well the lead hook punch. We worked on […]

Clinching from Kick-Catches (diary entry)

kick catch 4

08.11.2021 Hour seven of my couple client’s course on the Muay Thai clinch brought kick-catching together with the clinch. We looked at countering after having a kick caught. We began with the simple drag down and then we covered clinching to break and knee strike. All of this was preceded with a revision of upright Muay Thai grappling and knee strikes. We finished 3 x 2 minute rounds of clinch-specific sparring. Services

Kick Catching & Notes on Different Footwork (diary entry)

kick catch

01.11.21 The sixth hour of my client couple’s course on Muay Thai clinch took a detour into kick catching. We covered methods for catching kicks, how to follow up a kick catch and finally sweeps from the kick catch that brought us into line with last lesson’s sweeps in the clinch. We began with a warm-up where I decided to provide a litte comparison between Muay Thai and Western Boxing footwork. It’s something that I have become increasingly aware of […]

04.10.2021 Monday night’s first private lesson saw my first couple enter their third hour on the clinch. Tonight we brought together everything covered in the previous lesson and confirmed three of the four major knee strikes, the two main clinching positions and clinch escapes. This will be before we start looking more into how safely enter the clinch and tactics for breaking from the clinch as well as sweeps in future classes. After we drilled positioning, footwork and striking I […]
