Hook Guard (diary entry)

Cat & Ollie Hook GuardIMG_1818

26.09.2022 Hour seven of my couple’s current submission grappling/ground-fighting course looked at guard passing from the outside and introduced the hook guard (De La Riva guard). We warmed up with exercises specific to submission grappling including toe-to-the-line drills, combat base sit-ups, triangle crunches and half-guard side rolls before proceeding with some guard-passing drills. We looked at stepping around the guard to knee-on-belly (knee-pins) working these in as muscle memory drills. Then we did the same with back-scooting out of an […]

Tonight’s two hour lesson covered two more submissions from closed guard as well as three standard guard passes.   We warmed up with a combination of freestyle callisthenic movement and agility ladder crawls. This solo training was then followed by partner drills. […]

MMA Guard-Work (diary entry)

Defence from guard to standing4

25.08.18 This morning my client completed his seventh hour of a 10 hour course on MMA Ground-Fighting. We continued our work on fighting from the top position in the guard and then began work from the guard position for MMA. Striking and defending strikes from these positions is an art unto itself, requiring a lot of work looking at how to transition effectively. We warmed up with both top and bottom position callisthenics. Bear crawls, stiff-legged bear crawls, lizard crawls, […]
