Ground ‘n Pound Against the Wall (diary entry)

wall takedown

16.02.20 Tonight, during teacher-trainer, we completely focused on fighting from the top position against the wall. This is fairly peculiar to MMA and offers certain benefits for self-defence training. A solid wall or cage has no give and there cannot really contribute much to a rope-a-dope strategy other than it limits an opponent’s angles. Being pinned or stacked on the ground against a wall is even worse as there is only way to escape and your opponent can concentrate all […]

28.04.20   My second client on Tuesday completed his seventh hour of this course of MMA training. Most of this course has occurred during the lockdown period which means we have had to train via online video streaming. Tonight we spent a lot of time looking at striking combinations on the ground, using strikes to set up submissions and progressing our pin transitioning.   After a warm-up of sport-specific callisthenics and dynamic stretching, we moved onto striking combinations. 05.02.20 Wednesday night covered the triangle choke from the basic guard for my Junior Submission Grappling client and my senior MMA client focused on the reverse Kimura takedown to submission as well fighting against the wall. My junior client revised his arm-bar training from the previous lesson, including both the muscle memory drill and the technical set-up. Then we moved on the triangle choke from guard. The set up involves timing a push and pull action with the opponent’s arms […]

29.09.18   My client reached the two and a half hour point of his scheduled second 10 hour course in Mixed Martial Arts. Today’s lesson was a complete run-through of all ranges with less time concerned with the ground. We looked at mainly punching entries – but later added on kicks and defended kicks – into takedowns.   We began with mirror foot-work. This progressed to changing levels, upper body movement (slips and rolling), range finding and cues to sprawl. […]

26.07.2018   This evening saw the beginning of my client’s first lesson in MMA ground-fighting. As the title suggests, this will involve both striking and submission work from top and underneath positions. My starting point for this course was to look at establishing strong pins and transitioning through pins to work the top position. In order to do this the fighter needs to have specifically trained core muscles. He needs to be able to coordinate weight distribution, maintain firm stability […]
