04.05.19   Saturday morning’s second lesson saw the penultimate session for this junior course in Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training. We worked on tightening up all combinations, improving defence and then going through all elbow strikes.   Our warm-up consisted of a series of building up exercises. We began with mirror footwork, both of my clients getting distancing and angling-off right. Then I introduced simple tools for creating distance such as the long guard and the teep. Next […]

high knee

21.02.19   Tonight my client began his third hour of his Course on Basic Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training. Work was primarily geared toward creating flow and building stronger transitions between techniques.   We warmed up with mirror footwork, paying particular attention to angling off, creating distance and taking ground. The rhythmic rocking motion of Thai footwork was emphasised to help generate momentum in techniques. These began with the jab and the teep. Then we used the four-punch […]

Getting to Grips & Breaking Them (diary entry)

eye gouge standing

13.02.19 The first lesson of the day was with my Kingham Hill class. We entered the realm of anti-grappling and grappling for self-defence. I approached it a little differently than usual. On previous occasions I have gone straight for the anti-grappling tactics, but recently I have become more inclined to familiarise students with the grappling range. My belief is that by getting an idea of how someone grabs and tries to manhandle a student, brings home the importance of maintaining […]

Ground ‘n Pound Begins! (diary entry)

DSC_0472

26.07.2018   This evening saw the beginning of my client’s first lesson in MMA ground-fighting. As the title suggests, this will involve both striking and submission work from top and underneath positions. My starting point for this course was to look at establishing strong pins and transitioning through pins to work the top position. In order to do this the fighter needs to have specifically trained core muscles. He needs to be able to coordinate weight distribution, maintain firm stability […]
