Roll the Dice, Do the Combo (diary entry)

dice

06.02.21 My client’s penultimate lesson focusing on kickboxing combinations put matters into the hands of fate, so to speak, as we rolled the dice for 12 of the 14. After a 10 minute warm-up round, rounds two to four were all performed at the roll of the dice. We are not quite at the stage where each combination is memorised, but it kicked the training up a level nonetheless. The final round alternated between combinations 13 and 14.   Check […]

Kickboxing Thai Boxing Combinations Skype Online Training (2)

22.01.21 The final hour of my two lockdown clients’ 10 hour course of stand-up fighting, brought them up to combination nine. As previously described, one of the lockdown students is recovering from knee surgery and we are adapting these combinations as he continues to heal. In addition to introducing the new combinations we also went back over combinations six to eight. Combination six uses two back/hammer-fists and one spinning hammer-fist. Combination seven teaches moving up and down targets in a […]

05.01.21 Tonigth my teacher consultancy continued with pre-lesson prep on Dutch-inspired kickboxing combinations. We revised the first two taught last week and I introduced two more. The new combinations included a lengthy one that brought in aspects from the first two – slip/crosses, slip/hooks and hook/body kicks – and a kick-based one that was more traditional Muay Thai in flavour.

Nine Combination Deep (diary entry)

Scott Diary Dutch Combinations

19.12.20 Hour five of my client’s current online course took us up to nine different combinations.  Previously, we had trained up to five. All these combinations have MMA and Muay Thai techniques, but there is definitely a Dutch theme. They are lengthy and fairly complex, involving a lot of slipping punches and smuggling in kicks. They were done over 5 x 10 minute rounds, including one round of warming up. New techniques in this session including the superman punch and […]

Efficient Inside Combinations & Lateral Footwork (diary entry)

31.10.20 Saturday morning’s lesson brought my client up to the 8.5 hour point of his 10 hour course on Western Boxing for Martial Art Cross Training. This morning’s very technical lesson covered putting together two combinations that coordinated footwork and head movement with punches, creating tactics that work well within the to and fro of a fight. We began with the step-jab and step-back-cross, eventually blending them with the pendulum step. Next we brought in slip left/lead hook and slip […]

14.04.20   Tuesday night’s second online video lesson was also this client’s fifth hour of MMA training. We looked at chaining more techniques together and comparing different range combinations as well as more ground fighting from underneath.   We warmed up various Boxing and Muay Thai techniques performed as dynamic stretches. Then we did some light shadow sparring, including footwork patterns.   From here I looked at the simple jab/low jab transitioning principle. After going through the basic combination we […]

Framing & Tempo (diary entry)

14 04 20

14.04.20   Tuesday night’s first online video lesson was my regular train the trainer coaching session. During lockdown, I am training a mother and daughter to run through various Muay Thai and Dutch Kickboxing inspired training drills. We looked more into framing, tempo, the calf-kick and expanding combinations.   We warmed up with one-for-one kicking drills. Hand setups for kicks are now a given but I began emphasising the use of frames, pawing jabs and other hand obstructions that can […]

09.03.20   Monday night’s training completed my client’s third course in Muay Thai. Although the discipline has remained within Muay Thai its main focus has been on developing punching. We have cross-trained in Western Boxing, taken some inspiration from Dutch Kickboxing and integrated this into the main Muay Thai framework.   We began with a warm up of basic mobility drills and then did 2 x 3 minute rounds of building up shadow boxing techniques. My client expressed a wish […]

12.02.20   Wednesday night’s Junior Submission Grappling addressed the coil lock/omoplata/sankaku garami from closed guard and chaining together all ranges in senior MMA.   The first lesson began with revision on the arm-bar and the triangle choke from closed guard. Then we addressed attacking the scapula in a triangle entanglement similar to Kimura but performed using the legs. We addressed the importance of engaging the core muscles and gripping the mid-section when rolling into the final submission position. The first […]

Isolating and Integrating the Cross (diary entry)

Straight right

13.01.20   Monday night’s lesson was the second hour of my client’s third Muay Thai/Kickboxing course. This course is focused on developing better punching. Tonight we looked at the cross (straight right) and how to develop its power as well as its place in various combinations.   We began with some simple callisthenic and dynamic warm-up exercises, specific to Muay Thai. Then we moved onto mirror footwork and revising the basic and step-jab. This was done with just hand wraps […]

Same Side Combinations (diary entry)

shin block

04.11.19   The sixth hour of my second course of Muay Thai focused on same side combinations. We looked at simple techniques such as the jab, the cross, the hook, the teep and the round kick. Previously I have mainly taught opposite side combinations. This serves as a good way to coordinate flow and weight transference in Muay Thai. Punches and kicks blend easier for beginners when they are performed in a piston-like fashion, and are comparable to the way […]

The first set looked at Western Boxing attacks and defences against kicks. The second added to this teeps and knees. The final set added in round kicks. We then commenced with […]
