OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

24.01.19 Tonight’s lesson was the ninth in my client’s Basic Western Boxing for Martial Arts Cross Training. We looked at various uses of the v-step and l-step, but mainly focused on the clinch. The warm-up consisted of mirror footwork, slipping and moving out of corners. By using the v-step and l-step to set up angles for punches, I encouraged my client to pick shots. These were done with increasing speed until we arrived at the Jack Johnson clinch setup strategy. […]

Footwork in the Clinch (diary entry)

Knee strike to head from clinch

23.01.19 Tonight I continued my work with the nephew and uncle team, which comprises a half an hour junior lesson and an hour senior lesson. The junior lesson brought in aspects of footwork and how they relate to the Muay Thai clinch. The senior lesson transitioned between stick-work, punching and elbow strikes, including groundwork. The junior lesson built up a series of punch-kick combinations. These were then connected with shin-checks, Dracula guard and teeps. Homework for this section was to […]

12.12.18   Tonight’s junior lesson continued work on Muay Thai, tightening up certain techniques and building combinations. The senior lesson put Wrestling at the core of MMA training.   The junior lesson began with guard and footwork. The client has transitioned from just using a peek-a-boo guard in Western Boxing to adopting a high guard, which is the most popular form of Muay Thai guard. I checked balance and we looked at throwing punches with bare fists. Although no impact […]

Sparring (diary entry)

shin block

28.11.18   Today was my Kingham Hill class’s second lesson in Muay Thai as part of their self-protection course. We revised the techniques taught in the previous lesson and introduced sparring.   The warm-up consisted of line-work, dynamic stretching, footwork and guard changing. Then we went onto the focus mitts going through some basic combinations: jab/cross, jab/cross/teep and jab/round kick.   We then went through some basic defensive techniques, such as parries, shin checking and teep clearing. This was prior […]

15.10.18   Tonight was the ninth and penultimate lesson in my client’s course in Basic Western Boxing for Martial Arts Cross Training. We worked a lot on putting combinations together, setting up various tactics using footwork and how to use the clinch.   Warm-up began with mirror footwork. Then we moved straight onto the pads to drill building up combinations whilst also using slipping, ducking and rolling appropriately. The key here was to seamlessly get head and foot movements linked […]

Bringing the Entire Dirty Business Together (diary entry)

Side headlock defence 6

07.07.18   This morning my client reached the nine hour mark of his course on MMA Stand-up/Dirty Boxing. We focused on drilling various tactics, bringing everything together and finished on bag routine.   The lesson began with a bulling wrestling warm-ups. This moved taking the dominant grip and drilling entries into sweeping. Then we drilled breakaways into trapping/punching combinations. We then changed to breaking from a Thai plumb clinch grip into round-kicks. Next we went back to taking the dominant […]

Pawing Jab for Dirty Boxing (diary entry)

23.06.18   We reach the six-hour point of my client’s course on Dirty Boxing/MMA Stand-up. Today I took a layering approach to three areas of restriction, which we revisited twice before moving onto MMA sparring. All of this was surrounding the concept of the pawing jab.   The pawing jab is a setting up technique. That is its specific purpose. Jabs are not commonly used as knockout moves, but it does happen. There is the shifting version favoured by the […]

Over-Hook Double-Arm Trap (diary entry)

body clinch

20.06.18   Tonight my client continued with our theme on trapping. We continued down our old school boxing route and explored a technique taught by the early 20th century world champion, “Gentleman” Jim Corbett, adding to it from an MMA perspective.   We warmed up with mirror footwork. Then we combined clinching and breakaways, setting up various basic strikes. This moved into plumb and pummelling exercises, and finally a couple of rounds of wrestling sparring.   Previously we used the […]

Trapping & Transitioning (diary entry)

In-fighting attack6

14.06.18   Tonight, my client continued looking at dirty boxing and its relationship with MMA in its entirety. We warmed up with some mirror footwork and take-down entries. Then we trained transitioning between the clinch and stand-up ranges and back again. This brought us back onto the dirty boxing tactics of Duran, Frazier, Hearns, Foreman, Corbett and Johnson, which we revised along with Muay Thai set-ups for kicks. From here we began looking at using dirty boxing tactics to set-up […]

Up Close & Dirty! (diary entry)

Knee strike to head from clinch

06.06.18   The second lesson of the day was a two-hour session focusing on dirty boxing/stand-up MMA. Please note that this is an advanced course connected to the transitioning work I have been doing with this particular client and not part of a set 10 hour course I am also teaching to another client. To avoid confusion I will always indicate the stage of this other course in these diary notes.   We began with the cover and discussed the […]

02.06.18   This morning’s lesson on Dirty Boxing/Stand-up Mixed Martial Arts brought us to the four-and-a-half-hour point. After the warm-up we moved into five rounds of specific sparring broken up with discussions on improving techniques. My client’s confidence has grown a lot in just 48 hours I am happy to say with a good understand with out to use and deal with boxing clinches. The wrestling is also strong. We now need to go back over Muay Thai clinching aspects […]

Attacking the cover1

31.05.2018 Tonight, my client continued his Dirty Boxing/Stand up Mixed Martial Arts course and we made it to the three-hour mark. After a preliminary warm-up we did some basic wrestling drills. This was to build up a familiarity with gripping and clinching positions. We drilled collar and elbow ties, over-hook/under-hook pummelling and arm-drags. Then we moved onto some grip-fighting sparring, emphasising circling to break and regain holds. Next, taking Roberto Duran as inspiration, we engaged in some boxing sparring. Here […]

MMA Revision & Trapping (diary entry)

Against the Cage1

24.05.2018   Tonight’s lesson on transitioning MMA took the focus onto trapping. We spent the majority of the class going through all the ranges. This began with a series of movement exercises – snaking, butterfly guard movement, combat base knee-walking and various footwork. This was followed by transitioning through all these postures on the move. Finally punching combinations were added on top.   We then changed to partner work. This began with mirror footwork, drilling two, three and four punch […]
