11.06.2023 Clubb Chimera Martial Arts were honoured to be Kuroten Practical Karate’s first open seminar guests. I was booked to teach a children’s self-protection and adult martial arts cross double event in Wivenhoe, Colchester. My new “When Parents Aren’t Around” model was very kindly launched through Athena School of Karate to coincide with the release of the associated book in paperback form. Unlike previous iterations of the seminar, these events are more closely linked to the text of the new […]

05.03.2022 My weekend seminar for Forest School of Karate began with a two-hour “When Parents Aren’t Around” lesson. This was delivered as a hard skills lesson, the school already having covered the soft skills via Zoom. We used the following activities:  Tactical Escape Agility Training – Serving as a warm-up, we used agility cones to encourage serpentine running and lateral running whilst avoiding objects. Purpose: Besides general agility and fast-twitch conditioning being essential requirements for tactical escape training, participants are […]

Defending the Takedown (diary entry)

In-fighting attack7

25.01.21 My ongoing course on “When Parents Aren’t Around” children’s self-protection kicked off my Monday night teaching. We are currently on a diversion route through grappling in order to understand anti-grappling and then move onto anti-abduction. Grappling is also a very common situation for many children to find themselves in due to its primal nature. Tonight we revised dropping levels, neck-ties, under-hooks, taking the back, over-hooks and double-leg takedowns. From here we explored a few incidental techniques such as sweeps, […]

Situational Awareness for Young People (diary entry)

situational awareness webinar 2

28.06.20 On Sunday I was invited to continue my online adaptation of “When Parents Aren’t Around”. Our attention fell on situational awareness. The lesson began with some simple physical exercises emphasising the importance of posture – becoming a hard target – responding to sudden changes with tactical escapes, striking and covering, and negotiating obstacles. I then introduced the class to videos that demonstated inattentional blindness. As per my teacher training lesson last Tuesday, I then set up an exercise that […]

Heading for and Heading the Head (diary entry)

eye gouge standing

11.03.20   Wednesday lunchtime continued my self-protection course with Kingham Hill School. We revised basic clinch grappling and began anti-grappling training.   The solo warm-up began with some simple dynamic stretches moving onto grappling callisthenics and then we drilled moving from a low posture as well as sprawls and double-leg takedowns. Then we moved onto partner work. We revised the main clinching drills from the previous lesson – collar and elbow bulling, plum position neck wrestling, over-hook/under-hook pummelling and wrist-grip […]

Foundational Work in Child Self-Protection (diary entry)

hinnerup what is a bully

28.01.20   With exception of teaching the post/superman punch/hook combination, my teacher consultation lesson was primarily concerned with the development of the new self-protection programme for children.   The first animal level for 4 year olds and up has been confirmed along with basic content. The emphasis here is for children to become aware of Bystander Effect, spatial awareness and situational awareness. A good degree of character building is included that both help them recognise bullying behaviour in themselves and […]

Second Self-Protection Lesson at Kingham Hill School (diary entry)

DSC_0344

25.04.2018   Today’s afternoon lesson was the second in Kingham Hill’s Basic Self-Protection/MMA course. We began with some simple fence targeting and target familiarisation. These exercises are designed to train a robust and legal way to set up a pre-emptive strike. I do this as a touch-contact drill to reinforce the behaviour to hit realistic targets. This is then overlapped with hitting the focus mitts.     We discussed intent and the anaerobic nature of striking for self-defence. This was […]

Child Self-Protection Course Begins (diary entry)

child training

09.10.17   Tonight I began a special personal training course based on “When Parents Aren’t Around” Self-Protection training for young people. My two clients were children at primary school. We aim to run a 10 hour course on self-protection and then look at other martial arts for cross-training, in an adapted form of what I advise for beginner adult martial artists.   Tonight we focused primarily on specific games to teach awareness, evasion and escape, building up to protecting personal […]
