05.11.2023 Day two of my extended version of “When Parents Aren’t Around” seminar for Hostlebro Taekwondo, Denmark was covered by a Danish news programme on TVMV. We began with the same warm-up and scenario training from the previous day. We layered commentary walking with tactical escapes and various other tasks. Teenage Self-Protection Seminar at Kingham Hill School (diary entry)
08.10.2022 I was booked back to teach for Kingham Hill school for an eighth time. However, instead of running my children’s self-protection classes termly “When Parents Aren’t Around” was presented as a four-hour seminar. The format is better suited for self-protection, which I try to deliver as like a First Aid course, but the challenge is to keep the attention of 14 or so 11-14 year olds for an extended period of time on a Saturday morning. Usually such circumstances […]
Defending the Takedown (diary entry)
25.01.21 My ongoing course on “When Parents Aren’t Around” children’s self-protection kicked off my Monday night teaching. We are currently on a diversion route through grappling in order to understand anti-grappling and then move onto anti-abduction. Grappling is also a very common situation for many children to find themselves in due to its primal nature. Tonight we revised dropping levels, neck-ties, under-hooks, taking the back, over-hooks and double-leg takedowns. From here we explored a few incidental techniques such as sweeps, […]

Everything is geared towards gaining control and minimizing personal injury. Initially this is through trying to avoid […]

30.08.20 On Sunday I was invited back for the fourth time to teach the next part of my “When Parents Aren’t Around” children’s self-protection webinar series for the ever-forward thinking Ryukyukan Shorin Ryu Karate Matsuri Dojo. The focus this time was on discipline. We looked at the best ways to motivate students to maintain good self-protection behaviours and practices. I also brought in the concept of the fence and when to pre-emptively strike. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK ME […]
Ground-Fighting in the Final Lesson (diary entry)
05.12.19 Wednesday’s lunchtime lesson saw the end of this term’s course of Self-Protection at Kingham Hill School. Today we focused entirely on symmetrical ground-fighting. Training began with a warm-up of various crawls, snaking and other ground callisthenics designed for good muscle activation. Then we revised escaping to standing from a guard position. The object here was to empower the guard position, a typical place someone might end up in a sexual assault, and to present the best options […]
Children’s Self-Protection Programme Consultancy (diary entry)
12.11.19 My second evening class on Tuesday was my teacher consultancy lessons focusing on a new children/teenage self-protection syllabus. My client presented a systematic overview of a programme she wishes to run alongside her established martial arts lessons that offers reward levels of achievement in alignment with the age group of the participants. My children’s self-protection programme is usually aged from 7 years to 13 years. However, I have taught younger participants and I also have a teen […]
