This is where the geek in me has a hissy fit. Tonight's lesson wasn't all about recreating the extinct ancient art of Pyx or Pugilatus, the actual form of fist-fighting practised by the Greeks and Romans. My personal belief is that the art died out and bareknuckle boxing, as practised in England from the 1600s onwards was more a spin-off from German Fencing (now also a dead art and not to be confused with "Academic Fencing"). To add further confusion, Greco-Roman Wrestling probably owes more to Bretton Wrestling and other folk styles in France than as an actual attempt to recreate Pale or Lucta wrestling, let alone a direct lineage to the ancient games. No, our focus, as we began our new 10-hour course was to round-up of Greco-Roman Wrestling and combine it with relevant aspects in MMA. The sparring games subsequently involved bringing in Boxing, via punching, and also elbows.
