After nine hours of teaching consultancy on children’s self-protection plus KEWAP and then a long weekend of seminars and workshops in person, I finished my current scheduled work with Hostlebro Taekwondo Klub, Denmark, with a fun tenth hour of online boxing training. Their enthusiasm had not faltered and it was great hear that after I had left Denmark, the school had got straight back into practising the ankle picks we had trained on Sunday. Anyway, tonight was all about boxing and footwork in particular. With the group all partnered up, we were able to run through several different drills.
We looked at using forward footwork to jab, double jab and body jab. Backward footwork brought in backward jabs. Lateral footwork was used in conjunction with slipping as was pivoting and circular footwork. We lead hooked to the inside and also put this behind double-jabbing with circular footwork. We slipped to the outside with a jab on a pivot to throw an overhand punch/lead shovel hook/straight right combination. The body jab was paired with circling to the opponent’s left for a hook to the body.
The lesson then finished with 3 x 2 minute rounds of sparring:
Round 1 – Lead hand only
Round 2 – Body shots only
Round 3 – Freestyle
A brilliant finish for some inspiring teachers and students. My huge appreciation and respect for Mikael Oddershede, the two Kims and everyone else at the Hostlebro club, and by extension the supporters they attracted from across the leisure centre to across the country!
