The final hour of my couple client’s Mixed Martial Arts Ground Fighting course continued our work on defending with the knee-shield. We covered two sweeps.

Both sweeps diverge at the dog-fight position. In the previous lesson we looked at shooting from this position. This time we looked at what can be done when an opponent attempts to counter the shoot. An obvious response is to block the shoot by posting out with a wider base kneeling position and to firmly lock in the over-hook. This defence is countered by using the pushback momentum of the opponent to perform a sacrifice sweep, side-rolling into a side control pin. Another counter might be for the opponent to drop their position and attempt to flatten out in the dog-fight. In this instance the fighter should move to the back and take back mount.
