Kingham Hill MMA Seminar 2 (diary entry)

20241006_11131416.11.2024

My second MMA seminar for Kingham Hill School this term was with a slightly older group.

We got through quite a lot of material today, dividing our time up into four sections: stand-up, clinch, ground and wall.

Warm-up

We began with some simple transitional movements. This included getting up from the ground, footwork and some shadow boxing.

Stand-up activities

This second began with shoulder tag games, tying it into some of the shadow boxing. Then we isolated teeps in some one-for-one sparring. The same was done wiht low round kicks. Then both were combined with some free sparring and defence training. Next we layered the shoulder tag back in.

Clinch activities

This section was started with some under-hook/over-hook pummelling, moving into a take-the-back game. We then went back to line-work with some sprawling exercises, followed by a leg tag game to encourage shooting. We then layered in the shoulder tagging again and after that the kicks. This section finished with a clinching game with objectives to breaking the opponent’s posture, catch their leg and land knee strikes.

Ground activities

We began with basic escaping from side control and mount positions. Next, we went to guard with one person’s objective being to stand up and the other’s to break their posture. I then brought in fighting for the focus pad game, working from side control, mount and guard positions. Next, we introduced striking with the five taps the to head rule (five uninterrupted taps the head equals a win) versus reversals or dominant attack positions.

Wall/cage

This final section began from stand-up range with one fighter trying to move away from the wall and the other trying to move them in. Shots to the body with gloves on was permitted. We then began in clinch with one fighter’s back already against the wall and fighting to reverse the position. Next we went to the ground with one side trying to push the other to wall and the other side trying to get up or sweep. Finally, we began with one fighter on the ground against the wall and trying to escape.
