Friday morning saw the beginning of my UKSO Cotswolds’ teacher client’s new and second Submission Grappling course. He is the last of the Friday night three-hour workshop attendees to return to training. Previously, we worked on clinch/stand-up grappling. My client expressed a wish to resume the Submission Grappling we covered in our first course together but wanted to keep his eye in on the clinch. In order to meet this mandate, part of our warm-up section involved drilling and specific sparring from Greco-Roman/Freestyle Wrestling that was connected to the guard-work we do on the ground.
After some sport specific callisthenics, we drilled pummelling (underhook/overhook), shoulder pummelling (arm-drags), arm-drags against counters, arm-drags into double-leg takedown set-ups and then some underhook/overhook specific sparring. This moved us into some Greco-Roman inspired sparring but allowing for standing Kimura submissions only.
Moving the ground, we drilled guard pulling, hip bumping and Kimura twists. Then we paired up and I gradually increased the pressure on an activity where my client aimed to stop me from standing up and to break my posture. With these simple controls in place, we drilled the hip bump and the Kimura submission. I then brought in opening the closed the guard to control the hips. The lesson finished with the hip escape.
