Ground ‘n Pound Deconstruction (diary entry)

ground n pound insta28.01.2025

Hour three of my client’s latest Mixed Martial Arts course continued our work on the ground, but this time from top position. This is the reverse of last week’s class where we looked at making the guard more proactive. When looking at it from a top position the emphasis is on posture. In Submission grappling this is to pass guard, which is far less important in MMA. This is where the ground ‘n pound strategy comes from. More specifically, this is where wrestlers developed ground ‘n pound. Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling is centred on achieving a pin and not getting pinned. It’s the not getting pinned part that has conditioned them against sweeps when sitting in an opponent’s guard and using that position to deliver powerful strikes.

Therefore, our training took the following format:

1o minute warm-up: Various crawls and get-up exercises, establishing posture and balance

3 minutes – Par terre Greco-Roman

3 minutes – Par terre Freestyle Wrestling

3 minutes – Maintain posture in guard

3 minutes – Stand up in guard without getting swept

5 minutes – Land 5 continues punches to the head or pass guard vs get-up, sweep or submission hold
