Getting the Knee Line (diary entry)

Cat & Ollie rolling knee bar trainingIMG_1698My client’s first hour of his new course on Submission Grappling picked up where the previous one left off as we continued with leg locks. It proved to be an interesting lesson. Firstly, all the rounds were five minutes, whereas up to now, I have been limiting the specific sparring to two minute rounds in order to layer in the material. Secondly, despite the focus being on getting submission positions for the straight ankle lock and the knee bar, not a single submission was performed. The reason for this being that everything was constrained by getting or defending against the knee line entry. This type of ecological dynamic allowed for better exploration and discovery.

After a series of specific warm-up exercises, which included some partner work with the long guard, we moved into the live work.

  1. Warm-up rolling
  2. Getting the ankle lock knee line from 50/50 guard
  3. Ditto
  4. Keeping the ankle lock knee line from 50/50 guard
  5. Ditto
  6. Getting the knee bar knee line

The lesson also included periods of discussion on better positioning and counters.
