My 1.5 hour lesson began with a warm-up of two rounds of Greco-Roman Wrestling. We then went back to Freestyle Wrestling and through all four ankle pick variations introduced in last week’s lesson. These were the elbow-tie and wrist-grip nearside versions and the collar tie and under-hook far side variations. Again, I emphasised the importance of getting the direction correct on the takedown. We need to be squaring up an opponent’s stance in order to break their posture and shoot on a diagonal angle. This approach neatly prepared us for the low single leg takedown, which is also performed on an angle.
