Sunday morning saw the return of my client teacher from Kuroten Practical Karate. I was booked to teach escapes from pins. She partnered her son who was also keen to improve his knowledge in this area. The lesson took place online via a Zoom link.

After a warm-up the lesson began with 2 x 5 minute rounds of specific sparring. It was important for me to see problems both my clients were experiencing, so they both spent a round playing the role of the person pinning and the person defending. After I took some notes and before I fed my response to what I had seen, I asked both what they felt were the biggest problems.

We then went though a serious specific situations, gradually increasing resistance as I coached defences. They looked at escaping to guard and reversing side control, full mount and scarf-hold.

The main takeaway was hip positioning. An easy point to forget is to bridge and not maintain the position. With live practice we looked at becoming more sensitive to weaknesses in the pin and to develop sound escape plans.
