Wednesday evening focused on developing footwork combinations for kickboxing. Taking a more Dutch-based approach to our Muay Thai, we put together a series of linked attacks from different positions. These all made use of footwork to help create momentum.
We began by combining the teep with straight punches and the pendulum step. I also layered on a rear round kick after the jab/hook back-step pivot. Looking at the diamond step we lead with a lead round kick and then an overhand. After going through these individual principles we chained together the following combination:
Pendulum step: Jab/cross/switch-kick – diamond step: lead round kick/over hand punch – pivot/jab/pivot/hook/rear round kick
The lesson was concluded with 3 x 3 minute rounds. The first round consisted of freestyling a lot of the footwork with various combinations. The next two rounds were intensive boxing and intensive kickboxing splitting technique, speed and power into 2 x 30 second bursts.
