Bob ‘n Weave (diary entry)

Boxing specific sparring04.1.1.2024

Hour eight of my couple client’s Boxing course focused on rolling. This practice is also known as bob and weave, and might be described as U-shaped ducking. Although the obvious purpose for this movement, along with slipping and ducking, is to evade strikes I believe it is most effectively executed as a repositioning technique. This makes it more proactive and less negative. Fighters like Smokin’ Joe Frazier, Henry Armstrong, Rocky Marciano, Archie Moore and Jack Dempsey all heavily utilised the classic version of bobbing and weaving. Fighters like Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson used more of a straight duck, level change before repositioning their bodies. However, they all did it when entering the attack and not necessarily waiting for a punch to be thrown. These used it to keep switching and feinting angles of attack as well as throwing momentum into their punches.

The lesson consisted of the following 3-minute rounds:

  1. Free-sparring
  2. Ditto
  3. Hooks versus bobbing and weaving

  6. Hooks versus hooks
