Bear Hugs & Bag Work (diary entry)

tracey diary 5

15.11.20 Sunday morning’s PT consisted of half an hour self-protection teacher consultation and half an hour work on heavy bag combinations. Teacher consultation was in response to a question regarding dealing with rear bear hugs. My teacher client had been asked about this from several of her students. Although she had some reasonable counters, she was sceptical about a lack of mechanical effeciency. Such concerns are highlighted by big size, height and weight differences. Smaller people can easily be dominated […]

Technique Isolation; Combination Innovation (diary entry)

Screen Shot 2020-11-14 at 13.03.20

14.11.20 My client began the first hour of his Muay Thai for Martial Arts Cross Training with a 12 round dissection of popular techniques. The premise for most rounds was to do two combinations primarily featuring the chosen technique. As we progressed, I encouraged my client to suggest his own combinations. This was to make the entire experience less passive and more proactive. Here and there I would suggest ways to improve the combination he put forward from a tactical […]

diary ground fighting 1

09.11.20 Tuesday night’s teacher consultation continued with ground-fighting revision. We used escaping side control as a starting point, covering reversals, arm-triangles and sweeping from the dog fight position. The reversal – a technique referred to by my client as a “pancake” roll – came from head-lock version of side control. Here we set up for escaping to guard and timed our reversal off our opponent countering the guard escape by putting more weight forward. The fighter immediately switches from snaking […]

grappling lesson athena 2

09.11.20 Athena School of Karate kindly re-booked me to teach another specialised topic: grappling for self-defence. This lesson was born out of teaching anti-grappling tactics in my 10 hour self-protection course. What I soon learnt from teaching a wide range of students was that in order to properly defend against the clinch range, one needs to be familiar with clinching. Wrestling is probably the oldest form of combat known to mammals and possibly the first codified sport alongside running. Although […]

08.11.20 Tonight my two lockdown clients began their next course. One of them is looking to improve her kicking speed whilst her partner will be going into an operation soon that will restrict movements with one of his knees. With this mind, I continued with the boxing combination I taught last week and adapted it for both of them. Prior to making these adaptations I went through footwork patterns, slipping and ducking before layering on the punching combination. Then I […]

05.11.20 Thursday night I was booked in for a lesson by a teacher friend of mine. He and his two children are training in submission grappling/ground-fighting concepts with me. Much like my regular teacher consultancy lesson, this coach also has the assistance of a grappling dummy. Previously, I have introduced them to the pin transition exercise. This time we revised all this information – going through the complete drill from both sides – and they then chose to follow a […]

03.11.20 Tuesday night’s third and final lesson was my teacher consultation class. Matters moved in a totally different direction as my client now has her lockdown daughter present for partner training. Despite my client having an excellent background and level of experience in submission grappling, I was asked to cover this topic as a means of refreshing information and providing an insight into my approach to this area. We went through my clockwise and anti-clockwise pin drill. This is a […]

We looked at developing much of what has already been covered and also bringing a lot of it together. After warming up we went into our footwork drills, progressing through steps forward and back into the pendulum footwork drill, pivoting off and creating angles as well as some lateral footwork drills.I covered set-ups for the gazelle punch and the Bizarro punch. We then did […]

03.11.20 The final part of my client’s 10 hour course focused entirely on developing a boxing combination. My client’s lockdown partner was injured several week back playing football and is due to go in for surgery. Therefore, we decided to turn training towards developing better punching. After a warm-up of some simple footwork, where we worked out what movement patterns were safest for him, we moved onto our combination. We built up a combination of jab/cross/parry/parry/slip left/lead hook/duck right/shovel hook/duck […]

Southpaw and Cobra Punching Intensity (diary entry)

shin block

02.11.20 Monday night’s second lesson was my client’s second hour of Muay Thai training and conditioning. A veteran nak muay, he had a very intense lesson working through southpaw concepts and then set-ups for the cobra punch. Prior to teaching southpaw, we looked at lateral footwork and getting to the outside of a fighter. From here we mirrored our footwork and used teeps to the liver or spleen to disguise stepping to the outside of the lead foot. Combinations from […]

31.10.20 My second Saturday lesson today consisted of the sixth part of my online adapted course on “When Parents Aren’t Around” children’s self-protection hosted by Ryukyukan Shorin Ryu Karate Matsuri Dojo, Pitsea, Essex. We took the focus onto the grappling/clinch range. At this point in a conflict the defender should be doing their best to avoid being clinched for a variety of different reasons, but in order to train defending this range one needs to understand this particular range. Drilling […]

Efficient Inside Combinations & Lateral Footwork (diary entry)

31.10.20 Saturday morning’s lesson brought my client up to the 8.5 hour point of his 10 hour course on Western Boxing for Martial Art Cross Training. This morning’s very technical lesson covered putting together two combinations that coordinated footwork and head movement with punches, creating tactics that work well within the to and fro of a fight. We began with the step-jab and step-back-cross, eventually blending them with the pendulum step. Next we brought in slip left/lead hook and slip […]
