The fifth lesson in my client’s second course in MMA for Martial Arts Cross Training continued where we left off and concentrated on ground work. We warmed up with a series of ground-specific exercises, using combat base, bridging, triangle crunches and snaking/shrimping. Moving onto material we covered last lesson, we also did some guard-jumping and guard sit-ups.
Training began in earnest by revising the arm-wrap/trap in guard into a scissor sweep. Then we went back over attacking the shoulder and elbow from this trapping position. This began with a roll into a straight arm-bar. We then looked at using the opponent’s resistance to this move to set up for a triangle strangle. Whilst covering this technique we deconstructed the muscle activation involved. In such circumstances the triangle has to be sprung like a trap. Coming from the scissor guard the fighter needs to work on being smooth in his transition as it is easy to get his foot caught. As with the arm-bar previously I worked on getting my client to hit the right angle when executing his technique. Positioning is vital.
The session was finished with some focus mitt focus mitt work from the mount position and when striking up from guard.
