General Lesson

Our theme of flexible upper body movement and defence continued along with footwork. I introduced the straight attack against offline counter-offense for both stand-up and clinch. This helped bring the class onto angulation, but it also highlighted problems with students moving forward when they were supposed to be countering. I will cover this in the next lesson. The class was finished with MMA sparring.

Private Lesson – Self-Defence

Our last lesson was concerned with hooks and circular movements. Tonight we shifted the focus onto straight movements. We began with the straight pre-emptive strike and follow-ups. We brought in rear straight line elbow strikes to help work the negative pulling force required to develop strong impactful forward strikes.

We then looked into some attribute training through kickboxing, covering several rounds of jab/crossing and slipping as well as front stamp kicks and push kicks. All of this helped reinforce the movement of the hips required to generate force. Branching off from the slipping jab, I took the opportunity of showing my two private clients of how the movement can be used to attain an arm triangle and we took it to its conclusion standing and on the ground.

We moved onto exercises that help develop the right muscle groups, using the right force vectors for the straight line strikes and upper body movements. Performing a correct press-up is a great example of a good basic exercise that will help develop good structure and movement. We ensure good posture, the correct direction of the elbows, keeping the legs together, keeping the head up and going deep enough. The session was finished with confirmation of improved straight striking on the focus mitts.
