The ninth hour of my client’s current boxing course worked more on exploiting ranges. When it comes to low guards, such as the Philly Shell, the guard can change between extending the low lead arm and the far tighter shell. The former is used for edge of range and long range fighting whereas the latter is for the mid and close range work. We worked on using the lead elbow more to deflect and set up jabs and left hooks. Using the extended low guard, the fighter picks off shots using outside footwork such as circling/back-peddling.

We also went back over the baiting drill where the fighter baits with two advancing/retreating jab/crosses at long range before leaning forward at edge of range. This encourages the opponent to attack whereby the fighter pulls and counters with a straight right/hook/straight right combination.

I coached all of this in a semi-sparring format. This allowed me to talk my client through the use of his guard whilst testing his guard and being able to correct him under live conditions. Next we took what was learnt onto the focus mitts. Finally, we finished with three rounds of sparring.

Round 1 – Outside versus inside fighting

Round 2 – Ditto with roles reversed

Round 3 – Free Sparring.
